Dozens of 6-foot-4-inch stainless-steel kiosks are to be installed in 19 subway stations in the next few months in what the Metropolitan Transportation Authority calls its "On the Go! Travel Station" program. They will replace some of the poster-size paper maps on platforms, mezzanines and turnstile areas, and also cut down on notices that sometimes proliferate to the point that they look like wallpaper.

Multimedia designer Excogitare and digital signage solutions manufacturer friendlyway recently worked with BMW dealerships across Italy to replace their paper point-of-sale displays with interactive digital signage kiosks, according to an announcement from Excogitare.

The friendlyway totem solution proposed by Excogitare was what we wanted: a robust and well designed unit that is easy to use and allows customers to get the information instantly."

The new totems combine interactive digital signage with the traditional paper brochure, which customers can take away with them.

Klaus Trox, CEO and founder of friendlyway, said, "BMW FS asked for a 'plug-and-play' solution. So we pre-installed our software in each totem. The dealer only had to connect the totem to an electrical socket and plug in the Internet cable.

"The entire solution is based on Intel Core CPU technology, which uses a powerful Core 2 Duo Processors. The digital signage engines are USFF (ultra small form factor) units from Dell. We have chosen Dell with Intel inside, because of its performance, robustness, 24/7 use, ability to upgrade."

Alex Curti, Excogitare's networks and communications engineer, said, "The system is a mix of interactive and one-way communication content. When the totem is not being used, information is displayed as screen saver. But as soon as a person stands in front of the totem, it comes alive. The units come fitted with proximity sensors, which detects when a person is standing in front of it and reacts displaying a relevant interactive information page."

The Kiosks operating system uses Windows7 and the suit of kiosk-related products from friendlyway: Composer 9 and Secure Browser. The friendlyway Secure Browser software provides protection for public workstations against misuse. The product protects the operating system from manipulation, deactivates system key combinations and enables restriction of the search area, according to the company.

To make the content available to every totem as and when it's needed, Excogitare created a cloud base solution by which the content can be modified remotely. All totems are IP addressable and connected to the internet.

"All content is hosted as a service," Trox said. "It can be remotely updated nationwide within minutes. This solution allows BMW FS to provide fresh and relevant information to its clients at a fraction of the cost that it would incur if it had to change paper signs."

padding-bottom: 6px; ">Digital interactive technology company Elevate Digital announced Thursday that it's raised $2.7 million in Series A funding, led by Advantage Capital Partners and Metropolitan Capital Bank. Prior to this round, company founder George Burciaga poured in $1.6 million of his own capital.

Chicago-based Elevate Digital, which was until recently known as smartDigital, is the maker of street-level interactive kiosks that integrate social media and advertising. It has partnered with Groupon, the Chicago Tribune and Metromix.

In an interview with VatorNews, Burciaga said that his company is doing things that no other company has done before, by "changing the way ads are constructed."

They do this by allowing users to interact with advertisements that will lead them to purchase deals, movie tickets, find out where to eat, take pictures or even find out where to get local transportation.

It is social media in an outdoor setting, Burciaga says. It allows people to interact without even needing their phone.

For example, the Kiosk may have an advertisement for a movie, such as the new Batman movie coming out next month. The interactive advertisement, which the user would click on, would lead them to be able to buy tickets to the movie through the kiosk and then post the interaction on a social media site.

"We own the ability to change the way people communicate," Burciaga says.

The kiosks are located in high traffic areas, and make money based on ad revenue, as well as through deals such as Elevate Digital's partnership with Groupon, which allows people to buy Groupon daily deals at the kiosks, and then either print them out or have them sent to their phones.

The fact that users are being asked to participate in social media advertising, rather than just looking at an ad, allows Elevate Digital to build a metrix of user data based on how many people choose each advertisement. It is a quantifiable number based on the actions of the userbase.

Elevate announced a new product line, including Elevate wall, Elevate glass and other formats for their kiosks.

The future of Elevate Digital

Elevate Digital is based in Chicago and currently has 100 kiosks, which they will be expanding to 200 by the end of the year.

Elevate Digital kiosks are currently being installed in downtown Miami, and will be in New York City in the next two months. The company is planning a 10 market deployment in the next 36 months, and plans to become a national presence.

The company, which has been around since August 2011, currently sees 18% monthly growth in impressions.

The ultimate plan, Burciaga says, is to have one million transactions, which does not mean that the customer even has to buy anything, per market every quarter. ArmorActive's interest in creating these new products originated after a project with Foot Locker, who requested to have custom acrylic iPad kiosks designed for their New Haven Mall, Lake Grove, NY store. Prior to this project, Foot Locker had deployed aluminum enclosures, which resulted in many issues including customers breaking into the enclosures and tampering with the iPads. Therefore, they had a specific design in mind when they contacted the ArmorActive design team - a durable, tamper proof, acrylic red enclosure with a matte finish and logo branding on each face plate. Out of this request birthed the "Strata" enclosure, a name coined from its layered construction.

Within only three weeks after the Foot Locker request, ArmorActive had designed, manufactured, and shipped the Strata enclosures per Foot Locker's specifications. With the Strata iPad kiosks mounted to existing retail shoe wall racks, customers can now browse the key features of each shoe, as well as search for products that may only be available at other locations. With the success of the Strata, Foot Locker's goal is to eventually deploy 4-5 iPad kiosks to each of their 3,000 stores nationwide.

Since their initial iPad kiosk project with Foot Locker, ArmorActive has expanded the Strata product line with theSpectrum, Swipe +Square, and Swipe +iDynamo. The top acrylic layer of all the Strata enclosures is abrasion resistant to protect the durability and clarity of the surface layer, which will withstand continual interactive use of the iPad. The Strata line also features tamper proof screws, selectable iPad access points and venting on the back plate for heat dissipation of the New iPad 3.

Similar in design to Foot Locker's enclosure, the Spectrum allows customers to choose from a wide range of acrylic colors or textured inserts to customize their enclosure. For example, a wood or stainless steel insert can be used to match a specific décor. With their Strata Swipe +Square enclosure, ArmorActive offers the first ever iPad enclosure to secure the Square credit card reader from loosening or theft. In response to many customer complaints regarding loss of connectivity with the Square reader due to pivoting in the headphone jack, the Strata Square iPad case holds the credit card reader in a fixed position, while also providing a slide plate support for an easier credit card swipe. The Strata Swipe +iDynamo provides the first acrylic iPad POS enclosure designed specifically for the MagTek iDynamo magnetic stripe card reader.

ArmorActive's Strata iPad enclosure line is available for purchase on iPadEnclosures.com, which also now sells the new"Exposed" acrylic iPad table mount, among many other iPad kiosk solutions. "The challenge for national brands and retail marketers is to keep pace with consumers as they move among devices and locations and to provide timely, compelling, engaging information that guides them to the purchase."

How consumers are using smartphones and tablets

Although the physical store is still an important part of the shopping experience, the study results show that retailers will be challenged to follow consumers across an increased number of connected devices and shopping journeys. The survey highlights how savvy consumers take the reigns of their shopping experience even within the brick-and mortar-store. It found that:

Almost two out of three shoppers use at least one device to research and transact while shopping and 28 percent use two devices at a time.

More than one in three shoppers has made at least one purchase via their mobile devices over the past six months, and tablet shoppers have an even higher propensity to purchase with their tablet, with one in four having purchased six times or more in the past six months.

47 percent of consumers confirm they use their smartphone to search for local information, including information about the local store they want to visit.

Prior to visiting a store, they use smartphones to conduct further research including looking for competitors' pricing, checking for sales, previewing products and reading reviews.

46 percent of shoppers look up prices on a store's mobile site where they intend to shop and 42 percent check inventory prior to shopping in the store.

"We learned that once again the customer is in control and will consume information in ways that are convenient for them," said Lauren Freedman, president, the e-tailing group inc. "They are increasingly leveraging mobile devices to power their browsing and shopping activities. Retailers and brands have to be flexible and adjust to these behaviors and be able to deliver not only timely but relevant, localized information."

Using technology to keep consumers in the store

One way brick-and-mortar retailers can motivate consumers to make purchases is the store is by offering them everything they're getting from their smartphones and tablets, Thomas-Zon said. Those include:

Competive pricing: Retailers can't be afraid to show competitors' prices. "You are now hearing about retailers with associates with tablets to help aid the sale. It's pretty clear from study that a lot of focus has been on what influences purchases, but the last mile needs to be a solution around keeping (consumers) in the store. What can you do to help the consumer to finish the purchase and feel confident so they don't walk out?"

Read more about retail kiosks and digital signage.

Source Link

<fieldset class="zemanta-related"><legend class="zemanta-related-title">Related articles</legend>

Kiosks Bring Online Convenience to Stores - Interactive Retail Displays & Digital Signage (retailsystems.org)

Touch-screens create online shopping experiences at stores - Interactive Retail Displays & Digital Signage (retailsystems.org)

Survey reveals shopper's multi-channel habits - Interactive Retail Displays & Digital Signage (retailsystems.org)

The Retail App Ecosystem (bizblog.blackberry.com)

Up to 40% of high street shops 'could close over next five years' (guardian.co.uk)

</fieldset>

By Karen Moss

The latest report from Shoppercentric entitled:
"Shopping in a Multichannel World" has been launched. It revealed that
87 per cent of shoppers used bricks and mortar shops as part of their
purchase journey.

Meanwhile 23 per cent of shoppers used catalogues and only 13 per cent
used smartphones during their purchase journeys, seven per cent used
tablets and just two per cent shopped via Internet TV.

Forty-five per cent of all shoppers now own a smartphone - 52 per cent
of men and 39 per cent of women. In terms of ages, smartphones are most
popular with the 18-24 year olds (64 per cent) followed by 25-34 year
olds (62 per cent).

Only 14 per cent of shoppers are tablet owners - 16 per cent of men and
11 per cent among women. They are most popular with the 25-34 year old
age bracket (21 per cent) followed by 18-24 year olds and 35-44 year
olds - both 17 per cent.

Just five per cent of shoppers have used QR codes so far; eight per cent
among men, and three per cent of women. Nine per cent have used a
retailer app. and five per cent a brand app. during a purchase journey;
in each case, the penetration is higher amongst men (12 per cent and
eight per cent respectively).

And just seven per cent of shoppers said they have used social media sites during a purchase journey.

When shopping in-store, 70 per cent of consumers agree that shops are
great for when you want to talk to someone, 73 per cent state shops are
good for experiencing items before they buy and 69 per cent agree that
going into store is a secure way of shopping.

But 79 per cent of shoppers cite crowding as the biggest problem in
shops. This is followed by high prices (50 per cent) and the time
required to actually go shopping (50 per cent).
Source link on RetailSystems

<fieldset class="zemanta-related"><legend class="zemanta-related-title">Related articles</legend>

Mobile Less Popular Way to Buy Than in Store, Researchers Say (pcworld.com)

This week's Wednesday update including Tesco's virtual fitting room, the value of social commerce and Facebook analytics (usefulsocialmedia.com)

Retail TouchPoints Unveils First Social Commerce Survey: The Push Toward Social Commerce (prweb.com)

The Struggle To Engage Across Multiple Channels Rages On (stargroup1.com)

</fieldset>
