Walgreens Debuts Customer Loyalty Program

Walgreens
Walgreens will launch its customer loyalty program, Balance Rewards on September 16, 2012. Shoppers can register online or in stores to accrue points based on purchases at Walgreens and Duane Reade, filling prescriptions, receiving immunizations, or even through participating in the retailer's wellness initiatives

Shoppers will have the option to download a 2D barcode to a smartphone to scan at checkouts instead of carrying a card. Members are awarded $5 for every 5,000 points earned, or points can be accumulated for larger rewards such as $50 for 40,000 points. The points are valid for three years and remain active as long as the member shops at Walgreens or Duane Reade once every six months. The program is expected to help improve sales and personalize offerings to meet customers' needs.

Walgreens will also expand the 200 store electronic health record service with Greenway Medical Technology to 8,000 locations nationwide. The service provides pharmacy staffers access to customer records for prescriptions, immunizations, health testing and pharmacy information in order to provide additional recommendations, such as when a customer is due for an immunization or renewing a prescription.
