ADA, OH -- Kroger, one of the nation's largest grocery retailers, has installed a Shop24 robotic convenience store on the campus of Ohio Northern University.
The giant vending machine, made by Shop24 Global LLC (Columbus, OH), stands more than 9 feet tall and has a 10x13-ft. footprint. It dispenses up to 200 traditional convenience items, ranging from snacks, beverages and refrigerated meals to cleaning supplies and over-the-counter medicines. The machine's stocking and dispensing system can handle products that weigh less than 1 oz. and up to 8 lbs.
Shop24 accepts cash and credit, debit and supplemental nutrition assistance program (SNAP) cards, as well as student meal cards.
The Kroger Co. operates in many states and under two dozen banners, with store formats that include grocery, convenience and jewelry, as well as multi-department stores. It reported $76.7 billion in sales during fiscal year 2009. Shop24 at Ohio Northern University is its first robotic store.
Founded in 1871, Ohio Northern is a private university, comprising five colleges with nationally ranked arts, sciences and professional programs.
Shop24 Global LLC says its automated convenience stores have been installed in more than 250 locations in 15 countries and have over 150 million transactions. Last month, Shop 24 Global made its foray into the apartment complex arena, with an installation in Utah. | SEE STORY
