Highland's Medical Center has made it a little bit easier for children to gain access to health insurance.

An ALL Kids Insurance and Medicaid enrollment kiosk has been setup in the hospital's Emergency Room. If a child doesn't haven't insurance, parents can use the kiosk to submit an electronic insurance application to see if their child qualifies for ALL Kids.

The kiosk is made possible by the Alabama Access to Health Care Alliance.

Gary Turner, Highlands Medical Center chief revenue officer, calls the kiosk a strong advantage  for the community.

"Now, when parents are here they can fill out the ALL Kids application to see if their child qualifies for the insurance program," said Turner. "No longer will parents have to fill out the application and wait to see if they are approved. This kiosk speeds the process up."

ALL Kids uses Blue Cross Blue Shield of Alabama (BCBSAL) to provide services through their preferred provider network. If a child is approved, coverage will begin on the first day of the month after the application is received.

Benefits include regular checkups and office visits, prescription drugs and medical supplies, dentists visits, cleanings and fillings, shots and immunizations, parental choice of doctors, X-rays and lab tests, hospital care and services, coverage for pre-existing conditions and eye exams and glasses.

Highlands Medical Center will sponsor a health fair on Thursday, March 1 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. At this time, the kiosk will be set up in the lobby, offering parents a chance to come by and sign their child up for insurance. Also, free cholesterol, glucose and blood pressure checks will be offered by Highlands staff to the community.

"It's a completely free event," said Jennifer McCurdy, Highlands Medical Center Marketing Manager.

To enroll a child in ALL Kids, bring a copy of the child's Social Security number, proof of each family member's income including a recent paycheck stub, letter from employers stating how much is earned or papers that reflect the amount of child support being received. Also bring proof of how much money the family pays for childcare, disabled adult care or child support.

"The enrollment kiosk and the health fair are just two more ways that we can give back to the community and remind them of the importance of maintaining a healthy lifestyle," said McCurdy.
