A new, internet-connected book checkout station for library materials has come to La Vernia.

They just need to scan it, type in a valid phone number and then make a selection. And, much like a candy bar or bag of chips, your book selection drops to the bottom.
The new book kiosk has been set up in La Vernia for the last two weeks and in that time more than 42 people have been by to scan in their library card and check out the latest reading material.
"I think it will be easier to check out books for projects, instead of actually going to the library," said Ivanna Contreras, a student in La Vernia. "And whenever the school hours are closed, this one will be open."
The new book kiosk, affectionately called "La Vern," is stocked up with 200 items, including paperbacks, audiobooks and hard-back books.
Directors at the Wilson County Public Library said Thursday that the kiosk is filling the gap left behind after the La Vernia Public Library Branch closed.
The closest library is 27 miles away in Floresville.
However, thanks to the patrons of the old La Vernia Branch, Wilson County had the funds for La Vern.
"This would give an option to seniors and adults that don't attend school," said Nicki Stohr, Wilson County Public Library director. "It will give them access to this reading and listening material."
