NEW YORK CITY -- Intel Corp. showed a few of the developments in its "intelligent vending" initiative during this year's National Retail Federation trade show here. Also on display were concepts that might be as applicable to micromarket operators as to any other sort of retailer.  Intel's work with international coffeehouse titan Costa Coffee (Dunstable, UK) was a center of attention at the show, which took place Jan. 13-16.

Machines will be found at drug stores and big box retailers, with an emphasis on stores that do not already have a coffee store inside. Safeway (SWY), the number two grocery chain, has already signed up for more than 50 kiosks. Safeway is betting on the kiosks, even though its units have Starbucks locations inside.

Tennessee DMV to deploy self-service kiosks

SoloHealth, which operates interactive screening kiosks in retail pharmacy locations, announced that it has received approval from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration for its new SoloHealth Station, which provides advertising opportunities in addition to its consumer health functions.

CORONA, CA -- AVT Inc. announced that the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office has approved its application for a patent that relates to wireless networks for vending machines.

Patent No. 8,191,779 B2 was issued for AVT-developed technology regarding a unique wireless system designed to manage a network of remote vending machines. AVT's patented technology employs graphical touchscreen user interfaces, which can include means for paying for items vended and a two-way wireless network to connect an enterprise control center with remote vending machines.

Alta Win Bikeshare in Chicago 400 stations
